It’s a letter, but not just any letter, this one is from someone not heard from in years. With surprise, wonder, anticipation, excitement, and some anxiety the letter is opened. What does it say?
It’s a subtle narrative that was not part of the original concept but the narrative actually evolved during the painting process. This is pretty typical of the way I work. The basics are established early (composition, drawing, values, and color), but as I’m developing a painting a storyline or title often presents itself. (Click image to enlarge)
In the following video, I show how “The Letter” was created. I show the photo reference, what inspired me, the color study, the palette selection, the drawing, the monochromatic block-in, and color application.
