After many years of teaching, a common deficiency I have seen in most student’s work is a weakness of values. What I mean by that is that the paintings lack strength…the darks are often not dark enough, and the lights are not light enough; in other words, the paintings are gray. They reside in the middle range of the value scale.
This video is all about strengthening the darks. The beauty of working with value only, no color, is that it is much easier to discern a weak painting. Color often distracts us from seeing its value…and a good value structure is the heart of a good painting. I challenge you to give it a try. I believe if we can’t create a good black and white painting, we will not be able to create a good full color painting.
